Once again nature smiled upon Virginia’s 2017 vintage and at Ramiiisol we celebrated another a stellar year! The grapes were picked on September 10 following a welcome generally dry season. The evening temperatures began to cool in mid-august, and some welcome rains fell the first week of September, priming the way for a brilliant harvest. So, 2017 allowed our living wines to be full of vitality, and exceptionally expressive of our terroir.
Our 2017 Cabernet Franc Riserva was produced from the highest quality grapes harvested within our two best performing blocks – Free Union, and Buck Mountain. The Riserva is elegant with beautiful minerality, enhanced by a touch of classic Cabernet Franc tones. The grapes macerated for 18 days in individual polygon lots specified with the help of Pedro Parra and barreled down into various sized oak vessels, ranging from 7.5hl – 2.25 hl. After 9 months, a first stage of blending the polygons took place, allowing a 7.5 hl Italian made botte to represent the components of Buck Mountain and a 15hl botte to represent Free Union. After an additional 9 months of aging in the large format oak casks, we made a final blend of 50% of each block to represent our Riserva. The final blend aged an additional 3 years to allow for the perfect marriage of flavors.
