30 years ago, sensing the long-term historical magnitude of politically divided people tearing down The Berlin Wall, Robert Hefner began negotiations for a section of the Wall. He was able to secure four complete sections of the wall, measuring sixteen feet in length and twelve feet tall. On the West German side are two murals by the graffiti artist Dennis Kaun. He painted a brightly colored, joyful king, representing freedom coupled with a largely colorless, blindfolded king, oblivious to the needs and wishes of the people representing his view of the two societies. The entire East German side remains lifeless gray cement. The Hefner’s believe that this piece of “Freedom Art” is a powerful visual image to all of a society drained of its life and creativity under the enslavement of an absolute dictator versus the colorful, lively, imperfect and always changing life in a free society.
